UN slams Belarus

A UN General Assembly human rights committee has approved a US-backed draft resolution criticising Belarus for human rights abuses, media restrictions and election rigging. The non-binding resolution, which overcame an attempt by Russia to block it, will now go to the 192-member General Assembly. The Minsk government has rejected the criticism, saying the committee was making statements instead of engaging in open debate.
