At the request of Poland during an informal summit in Avignon, head of EU foreign ministries announced abolishing sanctions against Belarus
This would be a reward for releasing the last political prisoners by the regime of Aleksander Lukaszenko. "Belarus will not implement democratic rules similar to those from Switzerland in just one day. But the stake is substantial: whether direct influence of Kremlin would end 200 km from Warsaw or not," said a Polish diplomat.
The Kremlin has threatened Lukaszenko that it would raise prices on gas deliveries to Belarus unless he acknowledges the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia by Tuesday.
"We are trying to convince leading EU countries to offer Lukaszenko something serious enough to compensate potential sanctions from Moscow," said a highly ranked Polish diplomat.
