AVIGNON, France: European Union foreign ministers are mulling an easing of sanctions against Belarus.
EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana says he had a long phone call with the isolated country's foreign minister in recent days after Belarus moved to release some political prisoners.
Officials say the 27-nation EU could lift some sanctions in coming weeks to promote democratic change there.
The U.S. suspended some economic sanctions against the ex-Soviet republic earlier this week after the release of several opposition activists last month. The EU has said it will only lift sanctions against Belarus once President Alexander Lukashenko frees all political prisoners.
The issue was being discussed during EU foreign ministers talks Saturday.
