Foreign observers have fiercely criticised Sunday's parliamentary election in Belarus. Just as in previous elections, opposition candidates failed to win a single seat.
The Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe says the elections themselves went well, but serious problems occurred during vote counting.
The OSCE says there were problems in more than half of all polling stations. In a large number of cases, observers were denied access.
The European Union says its is waiting for the official OSCE report.
Brussels promised it would lift EU sanctions on Belarus if the elections were free and fair.
President Lukashenko, who has ruled the country with an iron fist for the past 14 years, said he wanted closer ties with the West and promised the election would be free and fair.
