MINSK, Belarus (AP) - Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko is warning the West of the risk of failing to recognize upcoming elections as democratic.
He said Tuesday that "if Europe still does not accept Belarus," the ex-Soviet republic will tighten ties with
that have kept Lukashenko in power since 1994, and imposed political and economic sanctions on his country.
Lukashenko has made some efforts in recent months to improve relations with the West and has promised that Sunday's parliamentary elections will be fair.
But he also has cultivated ties with oil-rich Venezuela, which has promised to help ease Belarus' dependence on Russia for energy.
