Despite international pressure, democratic revolutions, and new reforms throughout the former Soviet republics and Central Asia, President Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus still enjoys popularity and faces no threat from upcoming parliamentary elections. Lukashenko rarely speaks to foreign media and may hope to outline the case for his regime in the face of mounting pressure from Russia, which chiefly supplies Belarus with aid and energy.
