Karen Stewart, the U.S. ambassador to Belarus, has been appointed principal deputy assistant secretary of the U.S. State Department's Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, the U.S. Embassy in Minsk said Tuesday.
Stewart, who returned to Washington earlier this year amid a diplomatic spat, has yet to officially step down as ambassador, the embassy said.
Since Stewart's departure, the embassy has reduced its staff from 32 diplomats to four amid a dispute involving U.S. sanctions on state-run oil company Belneftekhim. (MT)
