The Belarusian ambassador to Moscow has said that Belarus will shortly recognize the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
Vasily Dolgolev said, "We are allies and this says it all". He went on to add that the official announcement would be made by President Alexander Lukashenko on Thursday or Friday, RIA Novosti reported.
Lukashenko sent a message to Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Thursday saying that his country remained a reliable ally of Russia. He however called for the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) to find a common position on the recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
He also proposed including the issue on the agenda of the CSTO session scheduled for September 5.
The CSTO is a post-Soviet security alliance that also includes Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan.
