The daughter of jailed Belarussian opposition leader Alexander Kozulin Belarus says her father was freed from prison on Saturday. Olga Kozulina Kozulin says that her father, who was jailed for 5 1/2 years for organising protests against President Alexander Lukashenko in 2006, has been released for good and not merely for the funeral of his father-in-law.
Mr Kozulin was one of two opposition candidates challenging President Lukashenko in 2006 and was jailed after organising protests against the election, which the opposition leader claims was rigged.
Belarus has been trying to improve relations with the West after long-running arguments with Russia over energy prices. However, western countries made Mr Kozulin's release a condition for improving ties with the former Soviet satellite state.
