MINSK, Belarus: The Belarusian president's office says the head of the KGB has been appointed leader of the country's security council.
The move was criticized by the beleaguered opposition as likely to lead to even harsher measures against dissent.
Authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko's office said Tuesday that KGB head Yuri Zhadobin had been appointed. Lukashenko fired the previous head of the security council July 8, four days after a bomb blast at an outdoor concert wounded around 50 people.
Lukashenko was at the concert but was not injured. Subsequently, the KGB detained at least 11 opposition members in connection with the blast.
