MINSK, Belarus: Former East Germany national team manager Bernd Stange on Monday was selected as manager of Belarus national team.
The 59-year-old Stange, who won two East German league titles with FC Carl Zeiss Jena and later managed Hertha Berlin and VfB Leipzig in the united Bundesliga, the Perth Glory in Australia as well as the national teams of Iraq and Oman, replaces Belarusian Yuri Puntus, who was ousted earlier this month.
Stange's most recent job was with Apollon Limassol, helping the club avoid relegation in 2005 and leading it to the Cypriot championship a year later.
There was no information on the terms of Stange's contract.
Belarus is in fifth place in the seven-team Group G of European Championship qualifying with seven points, 10 behind group leader Romania and also trailing Bulgaria, Netherlands and Albania.
Bulgaria beat Belarus twice in four days in early June, once in Minsk and then in Sofia.
