Belarusian Prime Minister Sergei Sidorsky arrived in Moscow on July 30 to secure a $1.5 billion loan, in part to pay Belarus' $450 million debt to Russia's state-controlled natural gas monopoly Gazprom. Russian Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin unofficially approved the loan July 27. Belarus failed to meet a July 25 deadline to repay the debt. Gazprom raised prices from $55 to $100 per 1,000 cubic meters Jan. 1.
