According to Gazprom, Belarus has run up 200 million dollars in debt to it by paying an arbitrarily reduced price for Russian natural gas for the past six months. Together with President Dmitri Medvedev, Gazprom gives the Belarusians until the end of this weekend to settle the debt or face an 85-percent reduction in the gas flow to them.
Officials in Minsk have reacted to this by warning of a disruption in the gas flow to Europe across Belarusian territory.
