Belarus' rough diamond imports, at 16,668 carats in the first quarter of 2007, increased by 22.8 percent compared to such imports in the first quarter of 2006, says a spokesman for the Belarusian Finance Ministry. However, in terms of value, imports fell by 26 percent to US$3.48 million.
Compared with the final quarter of 2006, imports in carats fell 24.8 percent and imports in value fell 47.3 percent.
For the year 2006 as a whole, Belarus imported 62,251 carats of diamonds, up 22.4 percent from 2006. However, in monetary terms this related to a fall of 20 percent to US$17.269 million.
