Belarus, Russia (AHN) - Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty said Monday its Web sites had come under cyber attack. The online assaults were concentrated on the Belarus service of the U.S.-funded radio broadcaster.
The attacks, which flooded a Web site in an effort to overwhelm and prevent Internet access, began Saturday, according to a statement.
While Belarus appeared to be the central target, other Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty Web sites aimed at Iran, Russia, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, Kosovo, Macedonia, Bosnia and Croatia were also hit.
In a statement, the radio network compared the attacks to previous attempts by governments to knock the service off air.
"Dictators are still trying to prevent the kind of unfiltered news and information that (Radio Free Europe) provides from reaching people," the Associated Press quoted network president Jeffrey Gedmin as saying.
