MINSK, Belarus: A Belarusian court has convicted an opposition activist of beating a jail guard and ordered that he serve two and a half years in prison.
Sergei Parsiukevich claims the case against him was fabricated to punish him for his political views.
Minsk's Moscow District Court says he beat the guard while serving a 15-day sentence after taking part in an opposition rally earlier this year.
Courtroom spectators shouted "Shame!" after the verdict and sentence were pronounced Thursday.
President Alexander Lukashenko has cracked down on political opposition and independent news media during more than 14 years in power.
