Russia opposes EU sanctions on Belarus

MOSCOW Feb 1 (Reuters) - Russia's Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday that sanctions imposed by the European Union on ex-Soviet Belarus are "counterproductive", it said in a statement.

The EU approved extra sanctions against Belarus on Monday in response to Minsk's violent crackdown on protests after the disputed December re-election of President Alexander Lukashenko. (Reporting by Amie Ferris-Rotman, editing by Alfred Kueppers)
