Belarus is open to improving relations with the EU, and is prepared to forge close co-operation with EU member states, including Hungary, in the energy sector, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko told Gyula Thurmer, head of the Hungarian Communist Workers Party, in Minsk on Tuesday. Lukashenko noted that Thurmer had arrived at a good time for Hungarian companies to play a role in Belarus's economy.
Thurmer is the first Hungarian politician to meet Lukashenko during his 15-year rule. Hungary will open a diplomatic representation in Belarus this year, despite restrictive measures imposed on Belarus by the EU.
