Belarus Launches Early Voting For Local Elections

Early voting for the Belarusian local elections, scheduled for January 14, started on January 9, RFE/RL's Belarus Service reported. Some 24,000 candidates are conmpeting for nearly 23,000 seats in 1,581 councils (soviets). All polling station commissions combined have 70,000 members, of which only one is a representative of the opposition.
