Lukashenka Appoints New Prime Minister

Belarusian President Alyaksandr Lukashenka has appointed Mikhail Miasnikovich to be the country's new prime minister in a government reshuffle that comes less than two weeks after a disputed presidential election, RFE/RL's Belarus Service reports.

Lukashenka, whom officials say was elected to a fourth term on December 19, also replaced several deputy ministers.

Miasnikovich, who headed the presidential administration from 1995-2001, is considered to be one of the country's most influential figures.

Miasnikovich most recently chaired the Belarusian Academy of Sciences.

Miasnikovich replaces Syarhey Sidorsky, who had been the country's prime minister since 2003.
