Belarus told to release Russians or face cooldown

Russia has warned Belarus to immediately release 11 detained Russians or face a bilateral cooldown.

The message was from Deputy Foreign Minister Grigori Karasin in a telephone conversation with the Belarusian Ambassador to this country Vasili Dolgolev.

The 11 are under 10- to 15-day administrative arrest for turning up close to the December 19th riots against the re-election of the Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko. Nine were remanded in custody Monday, two may face a similar fate at a court hearing on Friday.
