No information on two Russian citizens detained in Minsk - embassy

MINSK, December 22 (Itar-Tass) -- There is no official information on the whereabouts of two Russian citizens detained in Minsk on December 19 and 20 during unauthorized opposition rallies, an official from the Russian embassy in Belarus told Itar-Tass on Wednesday.

According to latest information, eight Russian citizens were detained, of whom four are in a detention centre in the city of Zhodino, one - in a detention centre in Minsk, and another one - in a detention centre also in Minsk, said Vadim Gusev, a counsellor of the Russian embassy.

Late of Tuesday, the Belarusian authorities finally allowed Russian diplomats to see the detained Russians, Gusev said. Embassy officials met with five Russians overnight. The Russian citizens, according to Gusev, say they are kept in normal conditions, having three meals a day. "There were no special requests on their part," Gusev added.

Currently, Russian diplomats are heading for a meeting with another Russian citizen, Anastasia Rybachenko, who is kept in the detention centre in Minsk.

"The embassy keeps a close eye on the situation and is taking every possible effort to solve it as soon as possible," Gusev stressed. He also said the Russian embassy on Tuesday asked the Belarusian authorities to release the Russian citizens, who had been detained during the unauthorized rallies in Minsk.
