Minsk lets 100 protesters go

Belarusian authorities have released about 100 opposition supporters who were detained during last weekend's unauthorized protest rallies in Minsk, Interior Ministry spokesman Alexander Lastovsky said on Thursday.

He added that 500 more protesters are facing administrative penalties and that several journalists, including those from Russia's Nezavisimaya Gazeta newspaper and the France Press news agency, were freed after they paid fines.

The protest rallies took place in Minsk on December 19 in the wake of what the opposition called "rigged presidential elections" in Belarus.
