Belarus releases AFP journalist held after protests

Belarus police on Monday released an Agence France-Presse (AFP) journalist after arresting her in the wake of mass nighttime rallies against the re-election of President Alexander Lukashenko.

Maria Antonova was arrested as she tried to return to her hotel after the rallies were broken up by the police in the early hours of Monday morning.

After spending the night in detention, Antonova was released Monday afternoon, without being given an explanation for her arrest.

Belarus police arrested hundreds of protestors, including seven opposition candidates, after smashing the mass rally protesting fraud in the landslide re-election of Lukashenko.
