Lukashenko secures 4th presidential election win

The incumbent Alexander Lukashenko has won the fourth presidential election race in Belarus.

According to preliminary reports by the Central Elections Commission, almost 80% of voters have cast their ballot for him. The turnout made up over 90%.

The Belarusian opposition refuses to recognize the election returns. A rally against the current authorities was held in Minsk's Independence Square after polling stations had closed on Sunday.

The protesters tried to take the Government Building by storm. Commando units and the Interior Ministry troops were sent to the square to dispel the protesters. Some 100 people were arrested, including several presidential candidates, who were, besides, beaten up.
