Opposition ends protest action in Minsk

Special forces and Interior Ministry troops on Sunday evening dispersed an opposition rally in Independence Square. Demonstrators tried to storm the government building in Belarus. Several opposition leaders were injured during clashes with police.

There are reports of four presidential candidates having been detained. The opposition supporters protested against the preliminary results of presidential elections.

According to exit polls, incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko secured an overwhelming around 80% of the vote. Voter turnout was at over 90%.
