Ukraine, Belarus agree to intensify talks on cooperation

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenka have agreed to intensify talks for productive cooperation, local media reported Wednesday.

"This year we held many productive meetings and telephone contacts with Lukashenka and we want to intensify a dialog for developing bilateral relations," Yanukovych said at a meeting with Lukashenka under the OSCE summit in Kazakhstan.

On economic issues, Yanukovych noted the dynamic development of the Belarusian economy.

"I understand that this was the result of the tremendous work that took place for many years," he said, adding that Ukraine and Belarus have many joint projects.

"Ukraine is interesting in keeping the dialogue to discuss the the joint projects and many other vital issues," Yanukovych said.

In turn, Lukashenko confirmed he was ready to "settle with the Ukrainian side the questions that are in the best interests of the two countries' economies and peoples."

Belarus is Ukraine's northern neigbor and a former Soviet Union republic.
