Belarusian human rights workers are accusing law enforcement officers of abducting four young opposition activists over the last two weeks to scare them away from political activity.
The activists were all freed after several hours. One of them, Dmitry Dashkevich, says his abductors threatened to kill him. Dashkevich says the five men who took him from his home were in plainclothes but carried police radios.
The human rights center Vyasna confirms that law enforcement officers appear to have been involved.
The Interior Ministry said it had no information about such abductions.
European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek issued a statement Tuesday condemning the abductions in Belarus, a repressive former Soviet republic that is trying to improve relations with Europe.
