Railways of Belarus, Estonia and Latvia intend to launch new container train

The railways of Belarus, Estonia and Latvia intend to launch new container train a?sZubra?t on route Tallinn-Riga-Minsk, BelTA learnt from Alexander Evsiuk, the head of the marketing and transport logistics department of the Belarusian Railways.

Representatives of the railways of the three countries discussed the terms of the cooperation during the session which was held in Minsk on December 4-5. The participants of the gathering considered the running times, tariffs for containers transportation, the issues concerning the customs clearance.

The container train will include carriages with universal and specialized containers including refrigerator containers which will run from Estonia and Latvia to Belarus and back. The train will make trips once a week. In the future, the number of trips may be increased, the specialist said.

According to Alexander Evsiuk, the new container train will allow the Belarusian Railways to increase the freight turnover with Latvia and Estonia, to attract additional freights from those countries.

The Belarusian Railways has introduced competitive tariffs for the container trains.

The Belarusian Railways handles around 75% of Belarusa?T freight and more than 50% of passenger transportation. The total length of the BR tracks is 5,500 kilometres. Electrified lines are 874 kilometres long.
