Belarus: MFA Press Secretary Andrei Popov comments for the media on the Brussels-showcased presentation of the EU's Eastern Partnership Policy on 3 December 2008

We consider today's proposals of Brussels as another step to boost pragmatic co-operation with the countries in the European Union's immediate neighbourhood. The implementation of those proposals may become one of the instrumental factors shaping up a harmonic system of mutually complementary integration processes. An essential is respect for and consideration of views of all those involved in the processes.

Therefore, Belarus has already confirmed it is ready to work in conjunction with the European Commission to mould the "Eastern Partnership" and previously came out with its proposals to make the initiative meaningful in practical terms.

We are interested in broader co-operation with the EU along a number of mutually beneficial directions including trading, energy, transport, cross-border crime, environment, and agriculture. The contents of the current position paper issued by the European Commission have a lot in common with our interests in those areas. Therefore, we believe that the Eastern Partnership might become a platform for the exercise of some of those projects in a multilateral regional format that are already under ongoing branch-wise discussion between Belarus and the EU.
