Magisters adds new CIS office with Belarus tie-up

Author: Sofia Lind

Eastern European independent Magisters has added Belarus to its CIS bases with a tie-up with a local firm - believed to be the first cross-border merger by a Belarus law firm.

The CIS heavyweight has merged with 12-lawyer BelJurBureau, with all internal merger procedures expected to be finalised by January 2009.

BelJurBureau's team advises on dispute resolution, real estate and construction, M&A and corporate, intellectual property (IP) and tax. It includes partners Anna Rusetskaya and Denis Turovets, who will lead the Minsk office.

The deal follows two previous mergers by Magisters in the Ukraine and Russia in 2006. The firm then combined with Ukrainian Pravis Reznikov Vlasenko and Partners and Russian Legas Legal Solutions, strengthening existing offerings in Kiev and Moscow.

Magisters managing partner Oleg Riabokon said: "The merger will strengthen enormously our position as a leading law firm in the post-Soviet countries and responds to growing demand by Magisters' clients for a CIS-wide presence."

Turovets, BelJurBureau managing partner, added: "Today the Belarus market is one of the most attractive and financially stable in the region. The Government's recent privatisation plans make it a lucrative emerging market for early entrants as compared to more mature markets in the region such as Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan."

BelJurBureau was launched in 2003 as a spin-off from Vlasova and Partners. The firm's clients include the World Bank, British American Tobacco, PharmaSwiss, Pernod Ricard and the French Embassy in Belarus.
