Usackas proposed Belarus to form working group on electricity transit from Ukraine

During his visit in Minsk, Foreign Minister of Lithuania Vygaudas Usackas informed the officials of Belarus about the intentions of Lithuania to buy electricity from Ukraine and invited Belarus together with Lithuania and Ukraine to form the trilateral expert working group for solving technical issues of electricity transit.

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko, who had recently visited Lithuania, also talked about the possibility for Lithuania to buy electricity produced in Ukraine, informs ELTA.

Experts of the company LEO LT state that it would be possible to receive over a tenth of the current Lithuania"s demand for electricity according to the capabilities of networks in Belarus.

In Minsk, Usackas also asked Belarus to submit detailed information about the intentions to erect a nuclear power plant at the borderline with Lithuania in the nearest future, reported BC the Foreign Ministry.

On Monday, Usackas met with Foreign Minister of Belarus Sergei Martynov and Vladimir Makei, head of the presidential administration. In the meeting, most attention was paid to the development of bilateral economic relations of Lithuania and Belarus and the relations of Belarus with the European Union (EU).

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Usackas proposed to hold a sitting of the bilateral intergovernmental commission for economic cooperation in Kaunas in February next year and the business forum of Lithuania and Belarus - in Vilnius in April. The participants in the meeting noted that the acceleration of the implementation of local state border traffic for residents was especially important for the development of the bilateral relations between Lithuania and Belarus.

Usackas also introduced the EU Eastern Partnership Initiative prepared by the European Commission, which also provided a possibility to include Belarus.

Minister Usackas also met with the representatives of opposition parties.
