Rosatom to act as prime contractor for construction of nuclear plant in Belarus

Rosatom will act as the prime contractor for the construction of the nuclear plant in Belarus, Nikolai Grusha, director of the nuclear energy department of the Emergencies Ministry of Belarus, told reporters on December 24, BelTA learnt.

The negotiations with Russia on this issue will be held in early 2009. "We need to sign a framework agreement first (it is expected to be signed in Q1 next year). This will allow holding the negotiations on a contract with this certain company," Nikolai Grusha said.

According to him, Belarus has sent the proposals to take part in the construction of the nuclear power plant to the world's best companies in nuclear power engineering. Yet, the definite answer has come from Rosatom only. "We have no other choice because other companies have given no certain answer or cannot carry out the project in required terms. Apparently the first two units of the Belarusian nuclear power plant will be constructed by Rosatom.

According to him, an agreement with the Russian Federation on cooperation in peaceful use of nuclear power has been drafted. The draft has been approved by the Belarusian ministries and agencies and is now being coordinated in Russia. Belarus has signed a similar agreement with China. The Chinese Guangdong nuclear energy company will act as a consulting company for the nuclear power plant project in Belarus. A relevant contract will be signed in Q1 2009.
