Belarus may host Russia Topol missiles

Russia may deploy Topol missiles in Belarus, after failing to dissuade the US from plans to establish a missile system in Eastern Europe.

The nuclear-capable mobile intercontinental ballistic missiles would be placed in Russia's western neighbor should the US continue plans to deploy 10 interceptor missiles in Poland and a radar in the Czech Republic, AFP cited a defense ministry source as quoted by Russia's Interfax news agency on Tuesday.

US plans for the missile shield have irked Russia, which has strongly objected to the programs as a grave threat to its security.

"If the United States continues to bring elements of its strategic forces closer to Russia's borders, including missile sites in Poland and the Czech Republic, which are aimed at the reduction of our nuclear deterrent, mobile Topol complexes could be placed in Belarus," the source said.

The comments came a day after Russian President Dmitry Medvedev met his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko in Moscow.

Moscow has also threatened to place Iskander short-range missiles in its western Kaliningrad region, which borders Poland. Earlier reports on Monday suggested that Russia has planned to increase the number of missiles commissioned to dozens a year.

A government official, Vladislav Putilin, whose department oversees weapons industries, said Monday that the Russian military planned to commission 70 strategic nuclear missiles over the next three years.
