Source says Russia plans missiles in Belarus

Russia will station missiles in neighbouring Belarus if the United States goes ahead with plans for a missile defence shield based in Poland and the Czech Republic. The report comes from the Interfax news agency quoting a Russian defence ministry source.

An official ministry spokesman has declined to comment on the report. Earlier, Moscow had threatened to station missiles in the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad which borders Poland.

The issue of Georgia is also proving a problem for Russian-Western relations. The Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe announced on Monday that its observers are being withdrawn from Georgia from 1 January. Russia is refusing to lengthen their mandate, because the OSCE will not recognise the Russian-backed breakaway Georgian republics of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
