Belarus Samand work kicks into phase 2

Iran and Belarus have signed a deal to launch the second phase of the Belarusian production line of the Iranian national car -- Samand.

Under the agreement, Iran and Belarus will establish a joint company named Unison in the Belarusian capital of Minsk.

The Export Development Bank of Iran will finance the implementation of the project with a $36 million budget.

A senior official of Unison, Alexi Vaganov, says the second phase of the Samand production line will become operational in 18 months.

By 2010, the plant's annual production capacity will reach 120,000 vehicles, said Vaganov, who is the managing director of the largest auto and parts-making complex in Belarus.

Tehran would then be able to export additional production to Central Asia and European Union member states.

Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki was present at an inauguration ceremony for the commencement of the second phase of work.

Samand was introduced by Iran Khodro Group Company (IKCO) -- the largest carmaker in the Middle East, Central Asia and North Africa.
