Belarus, Iran need to work together to minimize impact of world financial crisis, President says

Belarus and Iran will have to work together to minimize the impact of the world financial crisis, President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko said as he met with Foreign Minister of Iran Manouchehr Mottaki.

"There is an economic crisis raging in the world. It used to be a financial crisis which then morphed into economic and in some areas into political. Belarus and Iran have no relation to the crisis, that is for sure,a?t said Alexander Lukashenko. He added, today Belarus and Iran should cooperate more effectively and on a larger scale in order to minimize the fallout of the crisis, reported Belta.

The President said, this meeting with Mr Manouchehr Mottaki will centre on the joint actions needed to execute the contracts signed between Belarus and Iran earlier. a?sTime has proved we made the right choice. And today it is critical to implement these agreements in a more speedy manner,a?t the Belarusian President said.

Today's level of bilateral trade between Belarus and Iran does not meet the potential of the two counties (last year it amounted to $75.9 million).

In January-October 2008, the bilateral trade reached $83.9 million. The Belarusian exports increased. Belarusa?T main exports to Iran include potash fertilisers, synthetic fibre, heavy-duty trucks and tractors. Today experts study opportunities to export meat and dairy products from Belarus to Iran.
