Belarus' exports of diesel fuel to Syria can reach 1mn tonnes a year

The export of Belarusian diesel fuel to Syria can reach around 1 million tonnes a year, the Belneftekhim concern told BelTA while commenting on the negotiations that were held during a visit of a Syrian delegation to Belarus on November 27-29.

"The Syrian side is set to purchase from Belarus up to 1 million tonnes of diesel fuel a year, the concern said. At the same time Belarus-made diesel fuel should go through additional tests for the compliance with the Syrian standards. "Our standards and those effective in Syria are bit different. We have received the diesel fuel quality specifications from Syria and will conduct relevant tests," said the Belneftekhim concern.

The sides are planning to agree upon the price at the next stage of the negotiations. "By the end of the year we can sign a contract if we agree upon the price formula," Belneftekhim noted.

In turn, Belneftekhim would like to buy phosphate feed stock from Syria for the Gomel chemicals plant. "We are discussing the signing of a framework contract to purchase up to 100,000 tonnes of phosphates a year," the concern said. The sides are set to agree upon the prices in the near future.

Belarus-Syria trade increased from $2.1 million in 1999 to $46.7 million in 2007. Over the nine months this year, Belarus' exports amounted to $57.7 million (up 47.5% from the same period 2007). Belarus' major exports are high-tech products (MAZ transport vehicles, spare parts, pumps, electrical equipment, tractors BelOMO optic devices), BMZ steel products, tyres, dried milk and artificial fibres. Syria's imports are fruits and vegetables, fabrics, confectionary and medicines. Since 2006 Syria has been supplying Belarus with phosphate feed stock for the production of fertilisers, since 2008 with aluminum web for the production of jalousie and rollers.
