Russia is Ready to Substitute Imported Food With Belarus' Products

MINSK. Dec 11 (Interfax) - Russia is interested in larger food deliveries from Belarus in order to cut down food imports from distant countries, Russian Agriculture Minister Alexei Gordeyev told a meeting with Belarusian Prime Minister Sergei Sidorsky in Minsk on Thursday.

"Belarus is one of our main partners. As to a number of articles, its products take a considerable share in the food imports," Gordeyev said.

Russia "is in general interested in increasing this share at the expense of reducing the share of products imported from distant countries," he said.

There are not only political reasons behind possible food imports from Belarus, Gordeyev said. "This is linked to a major extent to the fact that we are accustomed to this food," the minister said.

The quality of Belarusian food "is naturally higher and complies with our technological, sanitary and hygienic requirements," he added.

Belarus is interested in participating in Russia's federal and regional agricultural programs, Sidorsky said.
