Belarus to back Russia over U.S weapons plan

Malaysia Sun

Belarus says it will be on Russia's side if the U.S goes against Moscow to create new missile bases in Europe.

The U.S says it plans to build a missile defence system by building bases in the Czech Republic and Poland that could help intercept missiles fired from countries such as Iran.

Russia has however dismissed the alleged threat from Iran and said the U.S is targeting its territory.

Russia has warned it may place missiles in Belarus to counter the U.S plans and Belarussian leader Alexander Lukashenko has promised to support Russia.

There has recently been speculation that Belarus may once again join the Russian Federation.

Analysts have suggested that a joining together of Belarus and Russia could enable President Putin to retain his political influence by becoming leader of the new union.
