Report says Gazprom threatens to cut off gas to Belarus

By Associated Press

MOSCOW - Russian natural-gas monopoly Gazprom will halt supplies to Belarus on Jan. 1 if the former Soviet republic does not agree to a price hike, according to a report by a Russian news agency.

State-controlled OAO Gazprom also warned European countries of potential problems with deliveries via Belarus, the Interfax news agency quoted the company's chief as saying Wednesday.

Gazprom, which is demanding Belarus pay more than twice the current price for gas next year and hand over a 50 percent stake in its gas distribution system, refused to back down after Minsk threatened to siphon off Russian natural gas bound for Europe in the event of a suspension of supplies to Belarus.
