U.S. effort to raise Belarus in UN Security Council alarming - Moscow

MOSCOW. Dec 13 (Interfax) - The Russian Foreign Ministry has described the U.S. attempt to raise the issue of human rights abuses in Belarus at a meeting of the UN Security Council as an effort to turn that UN agency into a venue for discussing issues necessitated by the United States' domestic considerations.

"We believe that the UN Security Council must address only those issues which are within its competence, as laid down in the UN Charter, and a threat to global peace and security," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a commentary posted on its website on Wednesday evening.

"Moscow is alarmed by the American delegation's decision to violate Security Council procedures. There are other mechanisms in the UN system for addressing human rights issues, including the Human Rights Council set up this year," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
