Latvia to represent EU presidency

By TBT staff

RIGA - Latvia will represent the EU presidency in Belarus during the first half of next year, reported the Latvian Foreign Ministry. The European Council secretariat settled the decision.

Latvian Foreign Minister Artis Pabriks said the choice showed a high appreciation of the nation's diplomacy and would be "yet another chance for our country to show itself in the EU and international policy."

The assignment would require additional human resources and knowledge, he added.

As the EU presidency representative, Latvia will have to report to EU institutions and member states on developments in Belarus, represent EU interests, coordinate activities by EU member states and forward EU decisions to the Belarus authorities
