Belarusian Region Declares Days Of Mourning For Blast Victims

BERASTSE, Belarus -- The governor of the southwestern Belarusian region where a tragic factory accident killed 14 people has declared two days of mourning to commemorate the victims, RFE/RL's Belarus Service reports.

Beraste Oblast Governor Kanstantsin Sumar has announced that on November 3 and 4 all national flags in the region will be flown at half-mast. Additionally, all places of entertainment will be closed and entertainment programs shown on local media will be canceled.

The accident on October 25 in the town of Pinsk was caused by the explosion of two boilers in the workshop of a plywood plant. Many workers are still in hospitals in Minsk, Berastse, and Pinsk.

On November 1, the leader of Belarus's opposition For Liberty movement, Alyaksandr Milinkevich, called on President Alyaksandr Lukashenka to declare a national day of mourning for the victims.

Lukashenka has ignored the call and has not yet commented on the accident, RFE/RL reports.
