Belarusian way to Europe lies through fair presidential election - ministers

MINSK, November 2 (Itar-Tass) -- The way of Belarus to Europe lies through fair and free presidential elections, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle and Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said after a Tuesday meeting with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.

Europe cooperates with countries, which develop democracy, freedom and fair elections, Westerwelle said. "Thus, Belarus has only one way to Europe, which goes through fair presidential elections. We have conveyed this message to Belarusian authorities and citizens," he said.

"Europe wants neighborly relations with Belarus. However, this bridge to Europe is based on democracy, law-governed state, human rights, freedom and fair elections," he said.

If the upcoming election is fair, Belarus will use all benefits of relations with Poland and Europe at large, Sikorski said. He said that Belarus could get about three billion euros from various Western sources in the next three years.

The ministers said they expected unobstructed work of election observers and access of presidential candidates to the media.
