Belarusian president keen to boost trade with Azerbaijan

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko welcomed his Azerbaijani counterpart, Ilham Aliyev, to the Presidential Palace in Minsk on Thursday.

The Belarusian president praised the implementation of agreements on bilateral cooperation with Azerbaijan.

"I am happy that our relations are effective. Everything we agree on is settled and the result is an 11-fold growth in trade," Lukashenko said.

He said, however, that Azerbaijani-Belarusian trade can grow much further. "We are capable of raising this trade turnover to $500,000,000 in several years," Lukashenko said.

The Belarusian president said that Belarusian-Azerbaijani relations have been invigorated and the sides have defined the trends they should follow.

"We use contemporary methods, create joint ventures, we work for internal markets and are ready to enter third markets. This is a good prospect," Lukashenko said.

He proposed discussion of other issues with the Azerbaijani too. "I want to inform you about the meetings with EU representatives and Ukrainian leaders. Joint projects are possible between us," he said.

In turn, Aliyev said that relations between the two countries are dynamic and effective. "We have much in common, in particular, responsibility in the execution of decisions and this raises trust between our countries," the Azerbaijani president said.

He believes both countries will further intensify political interaction and implement economic projects.
