Belarus bans poultry import from Scanland, Sweden

On November 10 the main veterinary department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food of Belarus imposed temporary restrictions on the import of live and processed poultry and also feedstuffs and feed additives from Skanland, Sweden where an outbreak of Newcastle disease was registered, BelTA learnt from Vitaly Masarnovsky, the chief veterinary doctor - state vet inspector of the main veterinary department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food.

According to him, the measures have been taken to protect the domestic market and to prevent the disease from getting into the country. For the past several years Belarus has not imported poultry and feed additives from Sweden and has not exported to that country, Vitaly Masarnovsky said.

Newcastle disease effects avian nervous function, vestibular system that leads to a quick death of the birds. The disease is not dangerous for the human beings. According to the specialists, Newcastle disease, or pseudo-plague, should not be confused with the bird flu.
