Regular session of Belarus-Azerbaijan intergovernmental commission can be held in early 2009

Baku, Fineko/abc.az. A regular session of the Azerbaijan-Belarus Intergovernmental Commission on Trade & Economic Co-operation can be held in Minsk before the end of 2008, but its possible postponement for early 2009 is not ruled out.

Sergey Panasyuk, counselor of the Byelorussian Embassy in Azerbaijan, says that package of proposals of the Byelorussian party has been prepared and is now under consideration of the Azerbaijani counterparts.

"We await that the Commission will be in session this December, but taking into account that December is not an easy month when the results of the year are summarized we do not rule out possible postponement of the session for early 2009," Panasyuk said.

He outlined areas of partnership between the two countries that can become subject of the upcoming session's agenda.

"As a rule, the session discusses two underlying agreements - Agreement on Friendship & Co-operation and Programme of Long-Term Socio-Economic Co-operation between Belarus and Azerbaijan until 2015 that stipulate a whole range of partnership directions - trade links, co-operation in industrial sector, in the area of science, health, transport, tourism, education and culture," Panasyuk said.

Belarus is ready to consider Azerbaijan counterparts' suggestions for trade turnover increase between both states.

According to Panasyuk, overall level of bilateral trade turnover will exceed $100 million this year.

"Today it makes around $86 million and until the end of the year this figure will overtop $100 million. Compared to the last year's same term, this year export of Azerbaijani products to Belarus increased almost 2.5-fold," Panasyuk said.
