Estonian businessmen are interested in Belarusian foodstuffs

Estonian businessmen are interested in Belarusian foodstuffs, Vera Siracheva, the deputy director general of the Minsk office of the Belarusian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, noted during the opening of the Days of Business Cooperation "Minsk - Tallinn 2008" on November 4.

According to her, the Belarusian foodstuffs are in popular demand in Estonia. At present, the sides are discussing the possibility of their supplies to the market of Estonia and to the market of the European Union. Taking part in the negotiations are representatives of 80 Belarusian companies including Belryba, Belbakaleya, a number of food companies of the Minsk oblast. Belarus and Estonia may cooperate in investment, tourist and construction areas as well, Vera Siracheva noted, reported Belta.

In turn, Toomas Kuda, an official of the Parnu Chamber of Commerce and Industry noted that many Estonian companies would like to work with Belarusian businessmen.

In January-July 2008, the trade between Belarus and Estonia made up $267.8 million, or 231.3% as against the same period of 2007. The Belarusian exports reached $236.8 million (245.7%), imports - $30.9 million (159.7%). In 2007, the trade between the two countries increased more than two times as against 2006 to make up $270.7 million. Belarus posted a surplus in trade with Estonia to the tune of $184.2 million.

Belarus' main exports to Estonia are oil products, metal products, timber, trucks and tractors. Belarus imports fish and seafood, oil products, medicines and chemical products from Estonia. As of January 2007, Belarus had 51 companies with Estonian capital including 27 joint ventures and 24 foreign companies.

There is a dealer network of Belarusian exporters in Estonia. The Belarusian information-commercial centre in Maaru represents Belarusian companies of the light and woodworking industries, A.K.K. Company in Marjamaa trades in trucks BelAZ, Turi Bel-Est Company in Turi trades in tractors Belarus, Ottender and Valgmae Ltd trades in refrigerators Atlant, Taproban Company represents Mozyrsalt and it is a dealer of Gomel Chemical Plant, WestWard Company in Narva is a dealer of Minsk Bearing Plant. Orsha Flax Processing Plant has its office in Tallinn as well.

According to Vera Siracheva, Belarusian and Estonian businessmen have started to develop their cooperation since 2002. Then, the Days of Business Cooperation Minsk - Poltsamaa were held.

On November 3-7 this year, the Estonian delegation is in Minsk on a visit. The delegation includes representatives of 14 Estonian companies.

The Days have been organized by the Minsk office of the Belarusian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Estonian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
