Rosselkhoznadzor to Introduce Temporary Ban on Meat Product Imports from 14 Foreign Plants

From November 24, Federal Agency for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Supervision (Rosselkhoznadzor) imposed a temporary ban on imports of meat and meat products to the Russian Federation from 14 foreign enterprises.

The ban was introduced as Rosselkhoznadzor's officials had detected pathogens and harmful substances while the monitoring research of meat supplied to the Russian Federation from some foreign enterprises.

Thus, Listeria monocytogenes were detected in products supplied from two Spanish enterprises. Coliform bacteria were found in lamb meat and kangaroo meat supplied by 4 Australian enterprises. One US enterprise supplied products with Salmonella, and a very high content of antibiotics was revealed in products of the second one. The excess of maximum allowable content of antibiotics was detected in products shipped from three Hungarian enterprises, one Polish plant and two Belarusian enterprises as well.

When the products shipped prior to November 24 arrive from the said meat processing plants to Russia, the import license will be provided only after the conduction of close laboratory control. In case of detection of harmful substances, all products will be sent to the exporting countries.

Apart from introduction of restrictions on imports, Rosselkhoznadzor' officials will effect the complex inspections at enterprises supervised by the veterinary agency.

As it was reported in the Department of Veterinary Supervision at State Border and Transport of Rosselkhoznadzor Department for Primorye Territory, the restrictions were imposed on imports from the following enterprises: Est 282, Est 297, Est 688, Est 703 (Australia), -13556, 17564 (the USA), HU 110 EK, HU 105 EK, HU 62 EK (Republic of Hungary), Es-10.12683/Z CE, ES-10.17131/B CE (Spain), PL 30063801 WE (Poland), "Slonimsky Meat Processing Plant" and "Gomelsky Meat Processing Plant" (Belarus).
